My Show is “Flopping”…Now What?

Written by Monica Hammond

A lot of TheaterMakers believe that if they create a ground-breaking, moving, and innovative piece of theater the audience will automatically show up. While word-of-mouth is wonderful and a good review certainly boosts sales, a show cannot market itself.

Having a solid marketing mix and strategy is fundamental when it comes to the success of your show. Without the right team or strategy, your show could easily flop. Sounds a little scary, right? The good news is we have all been in situations where we’ve had to level up our marketing and completely change “the tried-and-true” strategies the larger marketing/advertising agencies typically use.

Here are a few quick strategies we believe every show and/or producer should implement.

  • Generate a list of leads and send weekly newsletters
  • Show exclusive behind-the-scenes content
  • Think outside the box – like REALLY outside the box
  • Create a unique campaign activation
  • Spend money to make money (paid advertising on sites like Facebook)

It can be scary to watch marketing dollars fly out the window. But, in order to succeed in this business, you have to continue to try again, again, and again. If you’re ever in the unfortunate position of watching your sales decrease, try something different. Wildly different. In time, you’ll likely discover a different outcome.
